True Holiness

Reflect: How do you define holiness?

Matthew 15:10-20

· Israelite view of holiness – clean vs. unclean

· The Pharisees (15:1-9)

· Jesus’ view

           o Ritual purity

           o Purity of heart

Why did Jesus criticize the Pharisees for focusing on outward action rather than on the inner source of action?

In some contexts, holiness can mean self-righteousness or arrogance. Does holiness connote a positive or negative quality for you? How does Jesus definition of holiness recalibrate your own view?

In what ways do you maintain “your tradition” (15:3) by supporting, and perhaps, fighting for your own preferences?

Where does the kind of holiness Jesus’ teaches about flow from? (Matthew 15:6)

At Maywood, we offer several opportunities for learning and spiritual formation. Every Sunday we have an adult Sunday School class that meets at 9:15. Typically, this class explores different books in the Bible. The format is a combination of teaching and interaction.

Throughout the year, we also offer other opportunities to learn and grow. Our Wednesday night adult class focuses on how we can apprentice our lives to Jesus, and learn from him how he wants to transform us from the inside out.

There are also small group Bible studies offered during particular times of the year, as well as book reading groups, special seminars, and occasionally retreats for deeper reflection and prayer.
